Litin’s Party Value moves to Plymouth Ave.

One of the Northside’s most festive and colorful neighbors has relocated. Litin’s Party Value recently moved from its former location near the Minneapolis Farmers Market to 913 Plymouth Ave N. The business has a long history in North in addition to its downtown following.
“My father grew up over here, so we had Northside stories all my life,” said owner Ned Litin. Litin’s father Donald Litin began the distribution business in 1947 and over the next 20 years it transformed into what is now known as Litin’s Party Value. “He got this business started coming out of World War II. Back in the 60s, he would buy closeouts and opportunistic buys and stuff like that, very eclectic things. And we were on 700 Park Ave, and he would just place the items on tabletops and sell them from there,” Ned said.
Ned Litin is 64 years old now, and has been visiting the shop for 60 years. His father opened it when Ned was four. At the time, Donald was selling a little of everything, but mostly the business was distributing and converting paper products into speciality sizes.
“We had a sheeter that would sheet them and cut them and we would get stuff like massive rolls of brown craft paper. They start out in those giant mills and we had the machinery that would rewind and slit them and convert them to custom sized stuff,” said Litin. “It was a wholesale distributor with the converting capability and then he just was trying to get rid of the closeout stuff and then one of the closeouts that he bought was from a napkin manufacturer and they were selling out all their Christmas stuff, so they had Christmas napkins, cocktail napkins, table covers, place mats, everything. That kind of started the seasonal side of it and then the churches started to come in. That's the beginning of this business.”
Right now Litin sees himself as the “downtown party store.” The store is home to a massive balloon section, thematic decorations, 40 options for solid-colored paper goods, special occasion supplies, and a massive supply of compostable paper goods.
But Litin’s is more than just a party store; they also sell catering goods, as well as bulk shipping and printing supplies. All of it is housed within a warehouse setting that Litin’s is known for.
Despite the size of their inventory, Litin is not interested in expanding his store or opening up new location.
“At the time that we were contemplating more locations, locations for Party City and others were opening up all over the country. My father gave me what turned out to be good advice. ‘Are you making a good living, are you happy, do you need to kill yourself?’,” said Litin. “And we didn't open up other locations, we just focused on just trying to do a good job here. And now all these other locations are shutting down.”
The store is open Mondays-Fridays from 8am-7pm, Saturdays from 9am-4pm, and Sundays 10am-4pm. They also offer online ordering. For more information, visit: https://www.partyvalue.com/
