Jumping for Juneteenth

Following a parade down West Broadway Avenue, dance troupes gathered for some friendly competition. A few high kicks and death drops later, dancer Kamarion with the Dancing Divas won the crowd favorite of his match.

This year's Juneteenth weekend celebrations brought out Northsiders in droves, whether in pouring rain or sweltering heat and sunshine. Neighbors from down the block and across town gathered at various celebrations in North Minneapolis to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S.

Juneteenth is a day when our community can rejoice in the company of old friends and new ones, pay homage to our ancestors, and fill the streets of North Minneapolis with the love, authenticity, culture, and talent that make us who we are. Joy was the word that came to mind when I ran in the rain and ran for shade with you all during celebrations. I am beyond fulfilled when I can come outdoors and see the Northside smile.

Northsiders Breona Maynard, left, Miss Juneteenth Minnesota, Ceray’na Alexander Little Miss Juneteenth, and Kamira Nelson, Teen Miss Juneteenth, earned crowns in the first-ever statewide contest.

Drummer Colin from the Brooklyn Park Lions Drum and Dance Team showed off his skills and kept the heart of North Minneapolis beating.

Lewee Blaze & Tango took to the stage at UROC and gave affirmations to a wet but smiling crowd to love themselves.

In between the entertainment line-ups at the stage on the West Broadway block party, praise music caught the ears of some eager to take a moment to lift their heads high and give thanks for the beautiful day.

June 15 was a rainy day, but that didn’t keep families from clutching their raincoats and umbrellas to enjoy the festivities at UROC on Plymouth Avenue.

The annual parade down West Broadway was both hot and a hit. A coach stayed on the sidelines with a spray bottle to keep dancers cool.
