DeAndre Collier, a regular at The Dream Shop’s open mic nights and other events, said the space offers him a sense of belonging and relaxation before starting his work week.
The Dream Shop MPLS is a Black-owned boutique and community space and hub for self-expression.
“Now I'm an insurance agent, so I feel like getting somewhere I can come and relax and have a good feeling and good vibe going into my weekend and my work week going forward,” Collier said. “Because they always have good events here that bring a family atmosphere for everybody to enjoy with each other.”
Collier credits much of the shop’s welcoming energy to the owner, Markella Smith.
Due to a charismatic host, there was no dead air, the audience frequently erupted in laughter and captured moments of joy on their phones.
Smith opened the space in 2021. She said her mission is to create a supportive community space for Black artists, makers, and entrepreneurs. Shop items include lip gloss, earrings, t-shirts, candles, and more. She hosts the open mics once on the first Thursday of every month.
“It feels like something I am supposed to do. I say over and over again that it is a labor of love,” Smith said. “It's not like my million-dollar concept, right? But it's needed. And it's about community. It's about sticking together and making sure that we support one another.”
After a woman went up to showcase her acapella singing skills, she returned to the crowd to embrace a loved one.
