North High Football coach scores top job as head of Twins security

North High School football coach Charles Adams III was named director of team security for the Minnesota Twins after leaving the Minneapolis Police Department.

Adams’ said his departure from the force transpired from the events that took place in Minneapolis over the summer. The injustice and police brutality on Black people, in particular the killing of George Floyd on May 25, sent Adams in a different direction.

“People know where my heart is,” Adams said. “I wear blue, but I’m Black.”

Adams is on leave from the force and plans to depart early 2021.

The beloved figure also lost his job as school resource officer at North due to the Minneapolis Public Schools ending its relationship with the Minneapolis Police Department.

Adams' official capacity to cater to and guide the youth on the Northside diminished quickly once the contract was terminated. As a resource officer, Adams embodied the same passion for helping the youth in class and on the football field.

However, the “opportunity of a lifetime” to head Twins security was knocking at Adams’ doorstep. The duties Adams will be tasked with as the director of team security will revolve around day-to-day security at the Target Field, at away games and in Fort Myers, Fla., site of Twins spring training.

Adams said the Minnesota Twins position will give him the opportunity to build relationships within the organization.

“I’m looking forward to building a bond with players, coaches and the team,” Adams said. “Similar to what I’ve been doing right now.”

Adams said he wants the opportunity to represent and show the Northside that anyone can do anything.

“I want to show the youth that there’s more than just one option coming out of the inner city,” Adams said. “Actually giving kids an opportunity to be involved in major sports and being involved in baseball; strengthening that in the city as well.”

While taking on the director of team security role, Adams said he will continue to coach the North High Polars football team. He said his players and the team is his top priority.

Adams said he uses coaching football as a platform to help direct youth and help them make the right decision.

“I want to keep my players together, keep them engaged and keep them out of the streets, Adams said. “From getting caught up in the violence to the things that are going on right now.”

Twins President Dave St. Peter said Adams had, “built a stellar reputation throughout the community.”

St. Peter said Adams’ dedication to the youth is one of his most endearing qualities.

“The Twins organization is excited to have Adams onboard,” said St. Peter. “We will benefit from his talent, professionalism and character.”
